Nuku’alofa, 30 Sept 2014: His Majesty, King Tupou VI has issued the Writs of Election confirming the General Election on Thursday, 27 November, 2014.
That will see locals voting for their representatives in Parliament.
The Writ of Elections has also confirmed the dates for nomination of candidates.
The Electoral Commission has called for the nomination of candidates to be held on Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th October, 2014 from 10am to 3pm.
Elections Supervisor, Pita Vuki said candidates can register at the following places:
– Office of the Electoral Commission in Tongatapu,
– at the Governor’s Office in Vava’u and Ha’apai
– at the Offices of Government Representatives in ‘Eua, Niuatoputapu and Niuafo’ou.
Mr Vuki said that they strongly urge all candidates to ensure that their nomination forms and all other requirements are completed before they are submitted.
“It is important that all nomination documents are completed by the candidate considering the time available for the registration process to take place,” he added.
Over 200 candidates are expected to stand in the General Election.
The candidates will fight for the 17 seats in the Legislative Assembly reserved for People’s Representatives, while Nobles hold nine seats in the 26-seat Parliament.
Meanwhile, 50, 405 voters have registered so far with the Elections Office.
That number could increase if voters who turn 21 after the Voter Registration deadline on September 16 register themselves.
These people will need to do that by November 13 when the supplementary Voter Registration is finalised.
